Evolution of the blues was commissioned by festival founder Jimmy Lyons, who asked Jon Hendricks to write "a history of the blues" for the festival. Its 1960 debut performance had its Monterey audience alternately weeping and cheering, leading to a 20 minute standing ovation at its conclusion.
